27429-01 - Proseminar: Reading a Classic: James Joyce's "Ulysses" 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2011
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Werner Brönnimann (werner.broennimann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Markus Marti-Cimitro (markus.marti@unibas.ch)
Content James Joyce's "Ulyssses" is a challenging but extremely rewarding and often humourous novel. Although it is too long and too complex to be dealt with in its entirety during a semester course, the course will investigate representative excerpts from most of the book's chapters. Individual meetings will be devoted to specified extracts from this extraordinary prototopye of the urban novel. The practice of close reading and the study of narrative theories and methods will be stressed. Students are expected to prepare each session in advance and to contriubute to a lively culture of debate. Selected passages from a "Ulysses" film will also be studied.
Learning objectives The Proseminar will offer a practical as well as a theoretical introduction to one of the major works of literary modernism.
Bibliography Text to be purchased: James Joyce, Ulysses. Penguin modern classics. ISBN-10: 0141182806; ISBN-13: 978-0141182803
Further mandatory reading material will be made available on the EVA server.
Comments Preparation: A thorough knowledge of the novel's initial section (pp. 1-28) will be presupposed.
