Content As the third in a series on visual media, the seminar will reflect critically on the notion of visual theory. The diversity of visual culture and the need to render experience in visual form is the point of departure of the seminar. There will be two principle phases: the first will be a genealogy of notions of the visual field, considering perception, vision and visuality. In the second phase, visual culture and everyday life, the virtual in terms of bodies and spaces, and finally notions of affect will be explored. Each phase will examine canonical exponents of visual theory and address a variety of artefacts and practices that exemplify particular ways in which we can understand the visual.
Learning objectives Students will learn about key concepts in visual theory, and how different theories and approaches relate one to another. Students will follow the application of theoretical tools to actual cultural artefacts. Students will engage with contemporary developments in visual theory and will be able to outline potential future directions in the field.

Admission requirements This seminar is targeted at advanced students (MA-level) but is also open to BA-students who have successfully completed the 2nd year (including the proseminar paper in literature).
