| Content | Computer-mediated communication has been en vogue for more than two decades. The literature on online forms of interaction is constantly growing so that we can profit from theoretical and methodological discussions on how best to approach mediated language use. In this seminar, we will work with recent suggestions for linguistic description of online data (Herring 2007, Androutsopoulos 2006, etc.) and will work out differences with respect to diverse online means (chat, blog, message boards, email, interactive platforms). A special focus will lie on social network sites such as Facebook and interactive platforms such as Second Life. This seminar is workshop based. Students are requested to collect data and organize empirical sessions in which research questions and the use of methodology are discussed. As preparation, students should create an avatar in Second Life and familiarize themselves with navigating the platform (http://secondlife.com/), since we will hold some of our sessions not in the classroom but in Second Life itself. |
| Learning objectives | Students should learn to critically transfer the theoretical knowledge on methodology and computer-mediated communication to their own small research projects and present the results in written and oral form. |
