27437-01 - Seminar: Language in the Movies 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2011
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course on the English language in movies we will tackle questions such as how characters are stylized through the use of language, how contrasts are created within a movie by means of language, how this reflects language ideologies and stereotypes, and how we can discuss language in the movies as a discursive social action. This seminar draws on notions such as stylization from discourse analysis and is placed within sociolinguistics.
Learning objectives Students should become aware of some of the conventions and restrictions of the television medium and the link to language and ideologies. They will learn how to develop research questions and conduct small empirical projects.
Bibliography Seminal research articles will be made available in OLAT.
