Lecturers | Franziska Gygax (franziska.gygax@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | Gertrude Stein (now appearing as a character in Woody Allen’s latest film “Midnight in Paris”) as one of the most prominent literary figures of modernism has also been called the mother of postmodernism because her writings on the one hand demonstrate postmodern aesthetic practices, and on the other hand have been influential for a number of postmodern writers of the late 20th and of the 21st century. Relying on postmodern critical categories we can approach Stein’s highly experimental and decentering poetic language in a more encompassing way and establish links between her and contemporary writers such as Lyn Hejinian and Susan Howe, two representatives of the so-called L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets. |
Learning objectives | The aim of this seminar is to introduce students to Stein’s works and to become acquainted with some of the theoreticians of postmodernity. Furthermore, we will be reading a selection of texts by the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets. |
