30538-01 - Seminar: Small and big stories: Linguistic narratology 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2012
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Have you got a favorite story that you like to retell? Is it at all possible to tell the same story twice? What is the core of a narrative and what changes when you retell your story? What makes some people better story tellers than others? What are the 'interactional rules' when someone tells a story?

This seminar will deal with the study of spontaneous and elicited oral narratives told during conversations or similar interactions. We will study how language is used to create a storyworld and how that storyworld is sensitive to different contexts. This will include topics such as narrative structure, the relationship of the narrative to the conversation in which it occurs, deixis, point of view, tense variation, constructed dialogue, multivoicedness, the relationship of narrative to the construction of identity, retelling of narratives, 'second' stories and more.

Each student is expected to tape and transcribe one elicited and/or one spontaneous narrative in advance and bring them to the first seminar session. This will result in our own corpus of narratives, which will be shared by all the seminar participants.
Learning objectives Theories and methods of discourse analysis will be introduced through assigned readings and will be applied to a selection of the collected narratives every week. Students should thus arrive at a deeper understanding of both narratives and linguistic research methods in discourse analysis.
Bibliography A selection of texts and handouts will be made available online in OLAT.
Comments In this seminar we will work with data that you have collected yourself. This means that you will need to prepare the course in advance.
Preparatory meeting: 19 December 2011, 18:15, room 11. It is important to attend this meeting as guidelines for data collection and transcription will be issued.
