Content | This seminar focuses on the articulation between language and context. It is based on the observation that linguistic practices are situated (that is: indexical, context-dependent). The seminar will explore various ways in which language is adjusted to context and in return context constrains language. Various approaches and methodologies will be discussed. Context itself will be defined in relation with various theoretical approaches. Institutional contexts as well as material environments and the way in which utterances and turns do adjust to them will be treated. A range of empirical phenomena will be studied: how variations of formal vs informal language depend on context, how code-switching varies in context, how turn constructions adjust to dynamic contingencies, to institutionally, to particular recipients, how linguistic production adapts to the temporality of other activities, such as eating, driving, operating on a patient, walking, etc. The seminar will be given in English, German, French. It will involve short fieldwork experiences. |
