18889-01 - Seminar: English-Related Pidgins and Creoles 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2012
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this seminar we will explore some of the central issues in pidgin and creole studies (or 'creolistics'), an exciting and fast developing area of (socio-)linguistic inquiry. Creolists recognise that pidgins and creoles are legitimate, rule-governed varieties of language that differ in systematic ways from recognised standard languages, rather than – as the popular stereotype would have it – corrupted, incorrect or illegitimate forms of careless speech. We will focus on English-related pidgins and creoles, i.e. the English-lexifier contact languages that arose in the context of colonial expansion, the slave trade and the plantation system, and are still widely spoken in many parts of the world (e.g. Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific region, etc.).
Learning objectives To gain an understanding of the linguistic structure (grammatical, lexical, phonological) of English-related pidgins and creoles, to examine theories of their origin and development, and to explore some of the major problems and challenges that speakers of these linguistic varieties face in their everyday lives, e.g. with respect to education, the legal system, language rights, etc.
Bibliography A course reader will be made available online.
