26017-01 - Seminar: Visual Media 2 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2012
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The course has two main functions: firstly to introduce, practice and explore time-based media in general. Thus participants will be instructed in the basic terminology, characteristics and features of the field through reading a number of key critical texts. Secondly, we will apply and articulate theoretical aspects through an examination of British film, television and video. Taking both a historical and social view of the medium, we will examine key products, practitioners and uses of time-based media. This is the second course in a three-part cycle on visual media. The first in HS2011 related to photography; a third to follow in a future semester will explore visuality as a theoretical notion and work through a number of visual practices including novels, plays, film and fine art, especially focusing on British cultural artefacts.
Learning objectives To familiarize students with key concepts in time-based visual media.
To focus critical attention on the analysis of film, television and video.
To expose and extend students' knowledge in the repertoire of British film television and video.
