Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Ridvan Askin (ridvan.askin@unibas.ch)
Andreas Hägler (andreas.haegler@unibas.ch)
Philipp Schweighauser (ph.schweighauser@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Through readings of a selection of canonical texts, this course traces developments in the history of aesthetics. We will proceed chronologically, from classics like Plato's "Phaidros," Immanuel Kant's "Critique of the Power of Judgment," and Theodor W. Adorno's "Aesthetic Theory," to recent influential contributions by Graham Harman and Jacques Rancière. Along the way, we will touch upon issues such as the notion of beauty, the intersubjective validity of judgments of taste, the autonomy and end of art, the ontological and epistemological status of sensation, and the state of the discipline of aesthetics itself.
Learning objectives Students get acquainted with a variety of philosophical perspectives relevant to the study of literary texts and other cultural artefacts.
Bibliography Texts will be uploaded on ISIS.
Comments Note that this seminar relates to Philipp Schweighauser's lecture course "Theory Survey I/II: Literary and Cultural Theory" (23062-01). However, attendance of the lecture is not a prerequisite for this seminar.
