19947-01 - Seminar: The Sociolinguistics of Narrative 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2012
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this seminar we will examine narrative discourse within the dynamic context of human interaction. Adopting a sociolinguistic and discourse-analytical perspective, we will explore the structure of narrative as well as its function and use in people's lives, and we will engage critically with some of the most important models of narrative that have been put forward. Examining a range of narratives from various cultural contexts and genres (e.g. conversational narratives, news stories, refugees' stories, stories from the oral tradition, etc.), we will be particularly interested in how narrative practice intersects with the construction of social and cultural identities, self and other, belonging and exclusion.
Learning objectives Our overall aim will be to work towards a fuller understanding of narrative as a genre and of narrative practice as a vital component in the creation and negotiation of our social and cultural worlds.
Bibliography A course reader will be made available online.
