33122-01 - Seminar: Ethical issues of emerging technologies 2 CP (CANCELLED)

Semester spring semester 2013
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Laura Cabrera (laura.cabrera@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Bernice Simone Elger (b.elger@unibas.ch)
Content New technologies extend human powers and enlarge social options, but they generally also give rise to ethical issues, from unwanted social and environmental consequences to misuse of these technologies. While most of the ethical issues raised by technological change are not new, some new technologies do raise ethical issues in novel ways, and make them much more urgent than they were in the past. The general themes will be developed and discussed during the lectures, and supplemented with course readings, and classroom activities. This course is designed to provide students with a framework for thinking critically about the social and ethical issues associated with technological change. The course will involve and require active discussion as the course does not seek to provide answers to ethical questions; rather it hopes to foster the recognition of ethical and moral problems surrounding new technologies as well as to encourage students to think productively about them. Topics include ethical issues raised by nanotechnology in medicine, neurotechnology, robotics, personalized medicine and genetics, synthetic biology and human enhancement.
