Content | Studies in the Ethnography of Communication (EoC) are based on the assumption that to understand the meaning of a speech event one must study it within its social and cultural contexts. The approach is a highly integrative one that combines in-depth discourse-analytical linguistic examination with anthropological ethnographic methods. It unites a concern with the aesthetic dimensions of speaking with their social, cultural and political implications. Its overall aims are (a) to explore the crucial role played by language in the constitution of society and its cultural representations, and (b) to work towards a deeper understanding of cultural diversity and relativity. In this seminar, we will look at a range of case studies exploring verbal genres and speech events across a large variety of communities. We will engage critically with the concepts and methodology used in this field and will also get involved in some practical work. |
Learning objectives | To learn about the perspectives and methods used in EoC and, by closely examining the ways in which people use language in a wide range of culturally diverse settings, to gain a deeper understanding of the various and particular ways in which human beings communicate. |
