Content | Life writing has become a booming and extremely popular genre in our century, and the modes of auto/biographical narratives vary greatly (written auto/biography in book form, autopathography, "online lives," collection of photographs, graphic memoirs, biopic, performances, etc.). The reasons for the increasing popularity of this genre are manifold and need to be explored and discussed in the social, cultural, and political context of today’s notions of the (cult of the) self. |
Learning objectives | This MA seminar will introduce students to the growing field of life writing studies and to the debates on this genre on the one hand, and to exemplary life narratives that mirror characteristic topics and modes of self-representation of the 21st century on the other hand. Students are also invited to find their own examples of life writing texts and present them in class. |
