33358-01 - Seminar: W. G. Sebald & Ciaran Carson 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2013
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Andrew Shields (andrew.shields@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this course, we will consider two books each by the late German writer W. G. Sebald and the Irish writer Ciaran Carson. Sebald's prose style is remarkably singular, with its webs of associations and open or hidden allusions to other texts. Carson has developed a very similar style, more playful and less melancholy than Sebald's. All the works will be read in the original language (German and English), and the course will be taught in both German and English (depending on which author is being discussed).
Learning objectives In-depth study of the works under consideration.
Bibliography The following books by W. G. Sebald and Ciaran Carson are required for the course:
Sebald, "Schwindel. Gefühle" (1990)
Sebald, "Die Ringe des Saturns" (1995)
