33372-01 - Lecture: Gender Roles/Masculinities in US-American Fiction 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2013
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Therese Steffen (therese.steffen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The growth of interest in the critical study and theorizing of men and masculinities has, according to Jeff Hearn, derived from several, not always compatible, directions and traditions:
"First, there have been various feminist critiques of men. Second, there have been critiques from (male) Gay Studies and Queer Studies. Third, there have been some men's specific and explicit responses to feminism." This lecture course seeks to familiarize students with recent theoretical concepts of Gender Studies from masculine perspectives (Theweleit, Connell, Kimmel, Hearn et al.) as well as with a re-reading of major US-American modernist and postmodernist fiction from these critical vantage points. Texts by, among others, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Auster, DeLillo, Ellis, McInerney, Eugenides, Roth, Irving, Lethem, Cole will generate fresh readings of male bravery, endurance, success, pain, failure and love. Cultural representations of masculinities will also include films (e.g. by Michael Mann, Kimberley Pierce) and TV-Series (from Mad Men to Hunger Games).
Bibliography A READER will be available after the first week of the semester.
