33371-01 - Proseminar: Food and Drink in English and American Culture (3 CP)

Content Topics include: procuring, processing, manipulating, preserving and preparing diverse types of food and drink; places of consumption; rules, attitudes, ideologies; representation in word and image, symbolic meanings, the creation of identities through food and drink. Fictive and non-fictive texts on food and drink will be provided, e.g. historical recipes, Falstaff’s praise of sherry as well as cartoons and excerpts from relevant films. Field work, though recommended, will be optional.
Learning objectives Understanding the aims and methods of an interdisciplinary cultural studies project. Expanding students’ knowledge of English and American literary history on the basis of a thematic focus.

Admission requirements Successful completion of the first-year module "Learning about Literature and Culture"
Course application Enrol by email to alex.van-lierde@unibas.ch indicating your 1st and 2nd choice proseminar. The first 18 to enrol are guaranteed a place in the course of their 1st choice; others may be shifted to one of the other courses on offer.
