Content | This course focuses on institutional talk as opposed to everyday conversation. What are the characteristics of formal talk, of talk in institutional settings ? how are features of talk restricted and constrained in institutional settings – when compared to ordinary informal conversation ? The course aims at showing a variety of specificities of institutional talk, not only concerning lexis and syntax, but also interaction and multimodality. It focuses on specific turn-taking systems that characterize institutional exchanges, showing their consequences in terms of distribution of rights and obligations to talk as well as of participation. It also discusses various forms of sequence organization, by focusing on openings as well as a range of simple sequences, like questions/answers, requests/compliances, etc. Empirical examples will be given and collectively analyzed, taken from the media (TV, radio), political discourse, medical encounters, call centres, police interrogations, and administrative services. Issues such as the reproduction and transformation of asymmmetries, membership categorizations, rights and obligations, and other relevant features of context will be discussed too. The course will show how these aspects are reflexively achieved within specific organizations of talk and action. The course will be given in English, French and German. |
