Content In this course, we will read classical works of English poetry in conjunction with essays presenting critical arguments about these works. Students will engage with poetry and develop their own readings and approaches. In a second step, we will then discuss selected works of literary criticism and assess their value in deepening our understanding of the poetic texts and their role in the history of English literature and culture.
Learning objectives Students will develop their skills in close reading and interpretation as well as in understanding complex arguments presented in criticism on poetry. They should thus be encouraged to develop strategies for writing their MA seminar paper.
