35015-01 - Proseminar: Introduction to Linguistics I: English Linguistics 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2013
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This is the first of three required courses in the module Introduction to English Linguistics. In English Linguistics, students will learn about and practise analysing the core structural features of language. Thus, the course first considers what language and linguistics is and then covers the areas of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and introduces cognitive approaches to linguistics. The notion of linguistics as an empirically based discipline is emphasised throughout the course. Instruction will be through short presentations which are then addressed to analysis of material. There is an accompanying course book from which required reading will be set. Assessment of the course is by two written tests set within the course. Students must satisfy the requirements of this course in order to take the second proseminar in linguistics.
Learning objectives Students will grasp a basic understanding of core linguistic features and terminology. The ground work is laid for more developed study in the two following semesters.
