35024-01 - Lecture: An eye for an I: the singular first person in English literature 2 CP

Semester fall semester 2013
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Ladina Bezzola Lambert (ladina.bezzola@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The first person singular is singular indeed: as direct source of speech and writing, it carries authority; as personal account, it calls for empathy or raises doubts about the trustworthiness of an utterance. 'Who is speaking?' is the question we intuitively ask when we read a text, any text. Literary and dramatic texts raise this question in a particularly self-conscious fashion, thereby drawing attention to the acts of ventriloquism or manipulation that may be involved in the use of the first person ('Moby Dick': "Call me Ismael") and the crisis of identity which addressing the question may provoke (King Lear's "Who is it that can tell me who I am?"). Writing produces difference (or 'différance') also in the sense that it drives home the lack of continuity that might bundle an I, dispersing it instead into a multiplicity of snapshots.

This lecture series will trace the I through a wide spectrum of genres and periods in the diverse field of English literature (with occasional excursions beyond its boundaries) and probe its foundations and aspirations.
Bibliography Text excerpts will be made available via ISIS.
