Content | This course offers an introduction to the exciting fields of sociolinguistics and the sociology of English as a global language. Sociolinguistics is primarily concerned with the study of language in its social context. Its main focus is on linguistic variation - in relation to class, age, gender, ethnicity, social group, etc. - and it explores these issues on the basis of empirical research. Students will be introduced to the key concepts and main methods used in this field of inquiry. Issues to be engaged with will include language and social identity, the linguistic encoding of power relations, sociolinguistic aspects of education policies, etc. |
Learning objectives | Students will familiarise themselves with key issues in English sociolinguistics and the sociology of English as a global language and will gain experience in applying this knowledge to communication samples. |
