36454-01 - Block course: Introduction to Game Theory with Applications to Wireless Communications and Sensor Networks 1 CP

Semester spring semester 2014
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Christian Tschudin (christian.tschudin@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The ever-increasing demand for reliable and ubiquitous data communications and environment sensing raises new challenges in the design and the optimization of communication networks, and calls for the consequent adoption of suited mathematical tools. Recently, game theory (GT) has emerged as an effective framework for network design and optimization, since it provides analytical techniques to predict the outcome of interactions among rational entities.
Learning objectives This short course provides an overview on GT and on its relevant applications in the field of wired and wireless network optimization. The very basics concepts of GT are introduced by means of a few simple examples, and special emphasis is put on how to translate a real-world problem into an analytical game model. Relevant applications of GT to network design are presented, including power and rate control, bandwidth allocation, and routing. The main focus will be on non-cooperative techniques, although recent advances in the field of cooperative game theory will also be included in the discussion to provide a different perspective on a certain class of problems.
