36507-01 - Research seminar: Language Socialization: Discourse-Analytical and Ethnographic Perspectives 4 CP

Semester spring semester 2014
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Danièle Klapproth Muazzin (daniele.klapproth@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Language socialisation (LS) is understood as socialisation through language and into language, both in childhood (where it is intertwined with language acquisition) and across the lifespan, whenever individuals become socialised into novel activities, identities, languages and/or social institutions. In this seminar we will adopt discourse-analytical and ethnographic perspectives to engage with both theory and method of LS research. We will be particularly concerned with the interplay of micro-interactional processes and macro-cultural phenomena and will explore LS with respect to such issues and fields as language acquisition across cultures, social inclusion/exclusion, language ideologies, gender, schooling, etc.; as well as with respect to various discourse genres and phenomena (such as narrative, family dinner talk, verbal play, stance-taking, etc.)
Learning objectives Through their critical engagement with LS research from a wide variety of social and cultural contexts students should develop a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of language, socialisation and communicative/cultural competence, and of the interplay of structure and agency in LS processes.
Bibliography Texts will be made available on ISIS.
