| Content | This lecture course will familiarize participants with major texts in English and their respective African contexts since the 1950s. While Karen Blixen's OUT OF AFRICA (1937) is an earlier white report from a Kenian coffee plantation, the following texts at stake from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa reflect the multifarious conflicts between tradition and modernity, colonial and postcolonial settings and the usage, appropriation or refusal of the colonizers' language. The texts -- by Achebe, Tutuola, Aidoo, Armah, Soyinka, Okri, Bandele-Thomas, Kenyatta, wa Thiong'o, Vera, Dangarembga, Head, Ngcobo and Magona -- represent a broad spectrum of voices out of Africa seeking to discuss their concerns on their own terms. |
