36474-01 - Seminar: Allegory to Satire: A Graphic Vision of Britain 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2014
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar will explore the background to contemporary political satire in the cartoons of a trio of Guardian cartoonists: Martin Rowson, Steve Bell, and Chris Riddell. Starting with visual analysis of current cartoons, the seminar will then explore a variety of sources that feed into this particular practice; starting with visuality in Hogarth's The Rake's Progress, passing through William Blake, William Morris, and exploring the photographic work of Oscar Reijlander, Bill Brandt and Madame Yevonde. Importantly, we will also consider contemporary texts that inform and run parallel to this tradition of social criticism, including Wollstonecraft, Thackeray, Carlyle, and Woolf.
Learning objectives Students will learn about the development of a particularly English Allegorical visuality.
Students will have the opportunity to discuss in small groups relations between cultural ideas, images and text.
Students will engage in a reflective manner with contemporary critical voices in British political satire.
Bibliography A reader of texts will be made available before the start of semester.
