36467-01 - Research seminar: JM Coetzee's "Elizabeth Costello" and Its Sources 4 CP

Content J.M. Coetzee's 2003 novel "Elizabeth Costello" makes a wide range of references to other literary and philosophical works. This course will study the novel and a number of its sources in fiction, poetry, and philosophy, including works by Franz Kafka, Jorge-Luis Borges, Amos Tutuola, Rainer-Maria Rilke, Ted Hughes, Jonathan Swift, Paul West, and Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
Learning objectives In-depth study of a single novel and its sources. Characterization of the relationship between literary texts and their sources.
Bibliography The following novels are required for the course: J.M. Coetzee, "Elizabeth Costello" (2003), Amos Tutuola, "The Palm-Wine Drinkard" (1952), Paul West, "The Very Rich Hours of Count von Stauffenberg" (1980). Please purchase the novels from the 'Labyrinth' bookstore, Nadelberg 17, Basel. If possible, please read the novels before the course begins.
