38014-01 - Course: Iconography 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2014
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This is one of the options for the third of three required courses in the module "Introduction to Academic Communication in English" (ACE). The course will approach different ways to write about images from classic ekphrasis to analytic to creative responses. We will proceed from looking at a wide range of what are conventionally considered images: painting, sculpture, photography, film, television, video to other forms of imagery: text-based, sound-based, space-based images. In order to write about images we will explore tools that can be used to structure your approach to writing, as well as ways to get in touch with the content of images so that what you write may be analytical, creative or indeed both.
Learning objectives - Students will learn about the ways in which images can be approached through writing.
- Students will rehearse some of the features of analytical and critical writing.
- Students will learn about and engage with more creative uses of writing.
Bibliography A reader of texts will be made available before the start of semester.
