Lecturers Ariane Burckhardt (ariane.burckhardt@stud.unibas.ch)

Content Comics, or graphic narrative, the more recent and broader term, has increasingly been a medium of choice for telling life stories since the underground comix of the late 1960s besides having become an acknowledged field of academic research. Within the genre of graphic memoirs the experience of illness, both physical and mental, is frequently represented. The complex combination of the visual and the verbal narratives is one of the reasons for this popularity as it allows their authors to express their experiences in new and intriguing ways. In this seminar we will discuss a number of selected American graphic memoirs by relying on theories in autobiography studies on the one hand and comics studies on the other hand.
Learning objectives Students will become acquainted with the tradition of graphic narratives and will be introduced to the concepts necessary to explore the selected primary texts. Furthermore, this course will provide participants with insights into the current debates on representations of illness in autobiographies.
Bibliography Marisa Acocella Marchetto, "Cancer Vixen: A True Story" (2009);
Ellen Forney, Marbles: "Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me" (2012).
A reader with additional primary texts will be made available by the beginning of the semester. Theoretical texts will be uploaded on ISIS.
