| Content | Le grammatiche tradizionali – scolastiche e non – attribuiscono in genere alla punteggiatura una funzione prosodica e/o una funzione sintattica. Secondo questo punto di vista, la punteggiatura servirebbe dunque da una parte a introdurre nel testo scritto pause e intonazioni, e dall’altra a indicare confini e gerarchie della struttura sintattica del periodo, producendo in alcuni casi effetti di disambiguazione semantica. Partendo dall’analisi degli esempi proposti dalle grammatiche e di un corpus di scrittura giornalistica e saggistica, vedremo che tale concezione della punteggiatura non è soddisfacente, e costruiremo un’ipotesi alternativa. Considereremo che, almeno nella scrittura italiana contemporanea di carattere funzionale, la punteggiatura abbia fondamentalmente un uso informativo-testuale, e che le manifestazioni con consistenza sintattica e/o prosodica non siano altro che corollari delle regolarità testuali o usi specifici in particolari tipi di discorso. Un’analisi, questa, che non si applica solo ai casi marcati di uso della punteggiatura – come ad esempio quelli in cui il punto “spezza” la sintassi (“Il presidente ha parlato. Troppo”) –, ma anche ai suoi impieghi cosiddetti normali, quali ad esempio quelli che contraddistinguono l’uso della virgola nelle frasi relative. Se, a differenza della relativa restrittiva, la relativa appositiva esige la presenza della virgola, ciò è fondamentalmente per una ragione testuale: solo la seconda viene a formare un’unità testuale autonoma, i cui confini, in italiano, sono sistematicamente segnalati (almeno) dalla virgola. Precisata e arricchita, l’ipotesi proposta ci permetterà di affrontare con cognizione di causa problematiche teoriche di carattere più generale, come in particolare quella che riguarda lo statuto della punteggiatura nel sistema langue (vs la sintassi nello scritto, e la prosodia nell’orale). Inoltre, essa ci fornirà gli strumenti per confrontarci – non solo descrivendole ma anche spiegandole – con varietà e tipologie testuali caratterizzate da usi interpuntivi peculiari, come ad esempio la comunicazione mediata da Internet. |
