38362-01 - Proseminar: Second Language Acquisition 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2014
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This is a first-semester course FW2.1 for students taking the integrated FHNW BA degree. The course considers the linguistic problems of English language teaching from a theoretical and practical point of view. In the first half of the course, the focus is towards linguistic theories and SLA (second language acquisition) theory with the aim of informing practice with theory. The course then turns to examine the materials and practices of teaching more closely, considering strategies that both learners use, and that teachers can adopt in the classroom setting.
Learning objectives - Students will become familiar with a broad base of second language acquisition theory.
- Students will thus have a set of theoretical tools with which to understand the ways in which a second language is learnt and may be taught.
- Informed by this theory students will be able to recognise, evaluate, and follow through teaching strategies.
Bibliography A set of selected texts will be provided.
