| Content | Scent is mediated by the olfactory system, which has an outstanding sensitivity and discriminatory power. A little change in a chemical composition of an odor can massively change it’s perception. It is estimated that humans can discriminate up to 100'000 olfactory stimuli; some studies even estimate one trillion olfactory stimuli. Moreover, odor-evoked memories differ from other stimulus-evoked memories regarding their emotionality and memory strength. This is because of the unique neural connection between the olfactory areas and the amygdala-hippocampal complex of the limbic system. In the present project we investigate cognitive and emotional processes involved in remembering odors. We are looking for highly motivated master students eager to participate in this project. |
