| Content | "L'âme qui loge la philosophie doit par sa santé rendre sain le corps lui aussi" (Essais, I, XVII) Et inversement: "Il n'y pas d'allégresse dans les productions de l'esprit s'il n'y en a pas en même temps dans le corps". Montaigne n'a cessé, tout au long de son œuvre, d'insister sur l'"énigmatique couture" qui unit le corps et l'âme. Tous ses contemporains se heurtent alors à un problème sans solutions : celui de la ligne de démarcation entre ces deux entités, physique et métaphysique. Or Montaigne problématise ce rapport en utilisant des métaphores très concrètes pour décrire les activités de l'esprit, qui montrent comment il pense dans et avec son corps. Ces figures affirment-elles l'union substantielle de l'âme et du corps ou la démentent-elles ? Engageant le lecteur dans un jeu interprétatif à choix multiples, elles disent l'impossibilité de tracer une frontière nette et de choisir entre littérarité ou figuralité. Montaigne n'est ainsi ni un dualiste à la manière des néoplatoniciens, ni un matérialiste, mais un mixeur, un malaxeur, un hybridationniste. On interrogera la manière figurée dont il représente "le progrès de ses humeurs", mot à prendre au sens médical et spirituel; la manière aussi dont il reconstruit l'expérience de son corps malade à travers une saine gymnastique de la pensée, qui redéfinit de manière inédite la notion d'individualité (corpus principal : I, 8; II, 12, et II, 37). |
