36488-03 - Course: Academic Writing in English II 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2015
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch)
Content This is the second of three required courses in the module Introduction to Academic Communication in English (ACE). The primary focus of Academic Writing in English II (AWE2) is on the use of secondary literature in academic writing; in addition, students will continue to work on the key structural components of expository writing addressed by AWE1 (thesis statements, paragraphing, transitions and developing an argument). As in AWE1, the course is conducted with input from the instructor and workshop activities in class involving individual, pair and group work. Instruction is also driven by feedback from written assignments. In this term, Peter Burleigh’s course will focus on writing in visual culture: Geoffrey Batchen, David Campany, Hito Steyerl. In Andrew Shields's courses the content is linked to two novels by Jane Austen ("Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma"); students in his courses should acquire and read the books before the semester begins. Beatriz Lorente's course will be about language debates on the global spread of English.
Learning objectives While further developing the academic-writing skills introduced in AWE1, students will work on the particular writing skills needed to fully engage with academic disciplines, above all how to work with secondary literature in expository writing.
Bibliography A course pack of material will be provided by the instructors. Students in Andrew Shields's courses should acquire and read the following two editions of Jane Austen's novels before the semester begins (both are available from the 'Labyrinth' bookshop, Nadelberg 17):
- Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen (Norton Critical Edition), 978-0393976045
- Emma, by Jane Austen (Norton Critical Edition), 978-0393927641
