| Content | Richly told stories of lives often spanning two or three continents, set in a globalized world, and told in English, are at the core of our readings and discussions. Arrivals, departures, living dreams and nightmares, cosmopolitan straddlings of different worlds loom large in the texts at stake, among them: Sam Selvon, "The Lonely Londoners" (1956), V.S. Naipaul, "The Enigma of Arrival" (1987), Bharati Mukherjee, "Jasmine" (1989), Hanif Kureishi, "The Buddha of Suburbia" (1990), Monica Ali, "Brick Lane" (2003), Taye Selasie, "Bye bye Babar or, what is an Afropolitan?" (2005), Taye Selasie, "Ghana Must Go" (2013), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, "Americanah" (2013), Teju Cole, "Open City" (2011). Theoretical texts on cultural roots (Anderson), hybridity, migration, exile (Said), cosmopolitanism (Appiah), 'third-space' (Bhabha), contact zones (Pratt), strangers (Kristeva) will complement the course. |
