39971-01 - Lecture: The Rise of the Novel 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2015
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Ladina Bezzola Lambert (ladina.bezzola@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The lecture course traces the development of the English novel from its origins in the late sixteenth and seventeenth century to the early twentieth century, with special emphasis on the eighteenth century novel. We will focus on formal issues such as the definition of the genre and its most prominent subcategories; on social issues such as the novel's relation to class, literacy, and gender; on the philosophical concerns underlying the genre, such as the novel's concern with epistemology and subjectivity; and on narrative issues, such as the creation of realism, verisimilitude, concepts of fictionality and authority. Beside this wide variety of issues, the course will address the novel's unprecedented success story and its crisis or rise from the ashes.
Learning objectives Students will learn about the history and the meanings of an influential literary genre.
Bibliography Text excerpts will be made available via ADAM.
