Semester spring semester 2015
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Computer-mediated communication has been en vogue for more than two decades. The literature on online forms of interaction is constantly growing so that we can profit from theoretical and methodological discussions on how best to approach mediated language use. In this lecture, you will be introduced to recent linguistic description of online data (Herring 2007, 2013; Androutsopoulos 2006, etc.) and will learn how to describe differences with respect to diverse online means (chat, blog, message boards, email, interactive platforms). A special focus will lie on social network sites such as Facebook and interactive platforms such as Second Life.
Learning objectives At the end of this course students should
- have gained a thorough knowledge of key concept in CMC research
- be able to describe technical and social affordances of different CMC modes
- have sharpened their understanding of research challenges in CMC contexts
- be confident to find new research questions
