39979-01 - Seminar: London 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2015
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content London is the largest city in Europe, the capital of the United Kingdom, and the self-appointed economic, political and cultural hub of the nation. This seminar aims to set a historical mise-en-scène against which to cast the current cultural and political landscape of the capital: a city with great energy, creativity, vibrancy and huge wealth divides. Part of this will be through reflection on historical and political background and part will be to engage with contemporary practice in cultural fields and political activism. We will explore the particulars of London that make it such a special place, and try to mine the small, perhaps less spectacular, yet all the more interesting features of the city, especially in the areas of visual and text cultures. The seminar is also intended as preparation for an optional excursion to London which will carry extra credit points. There may also be an opportunity to include participating in a conference on London to be organized by Birkbeck College.
Learning objectives Students will gain a broad view of the cultural landscape of London.
Students will contextualize current cultural practices against historical background.
Students will be able to engage critically with close readings of cultural phenomenon.
Bibliography Readings will be provided on ADAM.
