| Content | From Martha Gellhorn, Robert Capa and Michael Herr to Kate Adie, Martin Bell and James Nachtwey, war correspondents and war photographers have not only captured the public imagination through their work, but there has also been an increasing interest in their personal lives. Due to the changing nature of conflicts and wars, the growth of humanitarian aid agencies and their ubiquitous media presence, this interest now also applies to humanitarian aid workers. This seminar will examine representations of war correspondents/photographers and aid workers and the cultural impact of their ambiguous role as "hero and myth-maker" (Knightley) and "disaster gypsies" (Norris), as some critics have termed them, in contemporary British drama. Drawing on discourses of global media ethics and human rights, we will explore controversial issues ranging from war propaganda, celebrity activism and the phenomenon of compassion fatigue to witnessing as well as different theatrical forms, including the morality play, melodrama and verbatim theatre. |
| Learning objectives | Students will examine the challenges and limits of representations of war and conflict in British drama and explore key dramatic forms and terms. |

| Admission requirements | For MA students and BA students on the advanced level: for BA05 students those who have completed their proseminar paper in Literary & Cultural Studies; for BA13 students those who have completed ALL three introductory modules (including the proseminar papers). |
