| Content | Étonnante modernité. Ecrire et penser la surprise de Beaumarchais à Saint-John Perse: Peu théorisée en littérature, la notion d’étonnement est pourtant au cœur de la modernité. Non seulement sa quête traverse les genres : le « coup de théâtre » nourrit nombre de pièces ; dans un récit surréaliste comme "Le Paysan de Paris", Aragon célèbre le « stupéfiant image », et selon Saint-John Perse, le poète est celui qui « rompt pour nous l’accoutumance », etc. Mais de nombreux auteurs se sont aussi transformés en sociologues pour caractériser la modernité par la place inédite qu’elle aurait donnée à la surprise. Baudelaire associe le dix-neuvième siècle à l’expérience du choc ; Apollinaire demande aux écrivains de rivaliser avec « un temps fertile en surprises », et pour Valéry, « le nouveau et l’étonnant » marquent tellement le monde contemporain que nous risquons de perdre toute aptitude à l’émerveillement. Nous aborderons donc l’étonnement comme un fil conducteur permettant d'examiner des questions de rhétorique et de poétique (comment créer l’étonnement ? dans quel but ?) et d’ébaucher l’histoire littéraire et culturelle d’une passion, en traversant des exemples divers tirés de textes majeurs, et en croisant sur notre chemin des concepts comme ceux de nouveauté, de banalité, d’avant-garde ou encore de mode. |
