41526-01 - Proseminar: Slavery in the Ancient World 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2015
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers William Graham Claytor (graham.claytor@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The ancient world saw the development of slavery on a massive and unprecented scale. This course examines the origins, purpose, and function of these ancient slave systems, as well as the lives of slaves themselves, with a focus on Greece and Rome. How did one become a slave? What was life like as a slave? How likely was it to obtain freedom and what were the implications of being a freedman? What kind of range of unfree statuses existed and how did this change over time? We will attempt to answer these questions by drawing on literary, documentary, and archaeological evidence and considering some of the influential modern interpretations of ancient slavery.
Learning objectives The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the tools and methods of ancient history through a focus on slavery from Classical Greece to the Roman Empire. Students will be introduced to a wide range of ancient evidence and learn how to critically analyze this evidence in order to pose questions and produce arguments about the ancient world.
