26005-01 - Seminar: Discourse analysis 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2015
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content According to Stubbs (1983: 1) discourse analysis is "the linguistic analysis of 'naturally occurring connected speech or written discourse'. Roughly speaking, it refers to attempts to study the organisation of language above the sentence or above the clause, and therefore to study 'larger linguistic units', such as conversational exchanges or written texts. It follows that discourse analysis is also concerned with 'language use in social contexts', and in particular with 'interaction' or dialogue between speakers.” In this course on discourse analysis, we will explore (a) key issues of methodology in this field of research, and (b) will learn how to tackle real data by focusing on written and spoken narratives. We will study how people take turns in spoken interaction and secure speaking rights for their stories, how they use small utterances such as 'mh-mh', 'uh', 'uh-huh' to signal listener involvement, and recipient design becomes apparent in strategies by the teller to engage the audience. Students will be expected to work with data that they collected themselves and to engage in workshops so that hands-on experience in analyzing can be gained.
Learning objectives At the end of this course students will have developed a clear understanding of what discourse analysis is, what its methods and research interests are and will have gained experience in working with natural data.
Bibliography A reader will be made available at the beginning of term in OLAT.
