| Content | Despite the recent dramatic transformations in North Africa and the Middle East, Western representations of the Middle East often continue to be defined by stereotypes. This is particularly prevalent and problematic in regard to the reporting of wars and conflicts. How do Arab writers write themselves? How do they represent Arab people at home and in the diaspora and in relation to the global community? How do they portray gender relations and religious affiliations? These are only some of the important questions we will address in this seminar, in which we will explore Anglophone Arab writing by authors from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and the Arab diaspora in a variety of genres and formats. |
| Learning objectives | Students will be introduced to a wide range of Anglophone Arab writing and to relevant theoretical concepts such as 'Orientalism' and 'Eurocentrism'. |
| Bibliography | Students should acquire the following text: Hanan Al-Shaykh, "Only in London", London: Bloomsbury, 2001. Theoretical and additional primary texts will be made available on ADAM. |

| Admission requirements | Old BA curriculum (2005): This course may only be taken after successful completion of the first-year module "Learning about Literature". New BA curriculum (2013): It is strongly recommended that this course is taken only after the successful completion of the "Introduction I + II: Literary Studies" proseminars. |
