41887-01 - Research seminar: Law and Society in Late Antiquity 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2015
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Jean-Jaques Aubert (j.aubert@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The seminar will focus on the evolution of law and law making from the late third century to the mid-fifth century AD. Participants will examine various texts (petitions and rescripts, law manuals, and law codes) in order to better their understanding of the use and abuse of legal sources for ancient history. The seminar is divided into three parts: 1) the sources of law in the Age of Diocletian and Constantine; 2) the juristic writings of the fourth century; 3) the making of law codes, and their Sitz im Leben.
Bibliography Bibliography: Jill Harries, Law & Empire in Late Antiquity (Cambridge 1999).
Comments The seminar may be of interest to historians, philologists, and law students. No knowledge of ancient languages is required, but we occasionally look at material written in Latin or Greek.
