| Content | Die meisten Geschichten werden ausserhalb der Universität produziert. In einer Langzeitperspektive (1820-2015) betrachten wir wie der Fokus auf unterdrückte Gruppen die Geschichtsschreibung Südafrikas verändert(e), und welche Funktionen Museen und Kunst in der Interpretation von Vergangenem übernehmen. Exemplarisch zeigen Fallbeispiele – beispielsweise das Voortrekker-Denkmal bei Pretoria (Tshwane), das eGazini Outreach Project in Grahamstown, das District Six Museum in Kapstadt sowie das Rhodes Must Fall Movement – welche Rolle Geschichten für Individuen, Gruppen und Gesellschaften spiel(t)en. Der Kurs bietet eine Einführung in wichtige Ereignisse der Geschichte Südafrikas sowie in die kritische Reflexion über Geschichtsproduktionen im öffentlichen Raum. Geschichtstheorien, Fallbeispiele, Quellen und Methoden werden, je nach Teilnehmenden, in englischer oder deutscher Sprache diskutiert. History is largely produced outside universities. In a long-term perspective (1820 to 2015) we focus on how concentrating on previously suppressed groups has changed historiography in South Africa. We elaborate what functions museums and art have in the interpretation of past events. Exemplary cases – such as the Voortrekker monument near Pretoria (Tshwane), the eGazini Outreach Project in Grahamstown, the District Six Museum in Cape Town and the current Rhodes Must Fall Movement – show how important histories have been for identity construction. The course serves both as an introduction to the histories of South Africa as well as to critical reflections on the productions of histories in public space. Depending on the students discussions will be in English or German. |
