43471-01 - Seminar: The Image in Text: Virtual Visualities 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2016
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Peter Robert Burleigh (p.burleigh@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The seminar will reflect critically on the ways in which visual culture is expressed in literature. We will examine canonical exponents of visual theory and address a variety of media and practices, exemplifying particular ways in which text renders image. To start we will discuss a genealogy of notions of the visual field, discussing perception, vision and visuality and its relation to text in general. In the second phase, visual culture and everyday life will be explored, considering specifically how language can realize colour, form, and motion, in different ways from a more static formation in image. Thus, focussing on the ways in which image appears in literature, and how literary artefacts correspondingly further inform ways of seeing. A list of specific texts (novels, short stories, essays, and films) will follow shortly.
Learning objectives Students will learn about the basics of visual theory. Students will be able to contextualize notions related to visual media and contemporary social structures. The analysis of material fictional worlds will suggest how text and vision are ways in which we understand and negotiate our lived world.
