43538-01 - Research seminar: The Gender of Modernism 4 CP

Semester spring semester 2016
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Franziska Gygax (franziska.gygax@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In the 1990 edition of her critical anthology of modernist writers Bonnie Kime Scott discovered a number of "forgotten, gender-inflected territories" (Scott) of modernism and compiled a range of neglected texts by mainly female modernist writers. Twenty-five years later gender is still a theoretical category that interacts with other categories, but the interfaces have become even more complex and need to be explored and discussed besides establishing links to postmodernist texts.
Learning objectives This MA seminar will introduce students to current debates on modernism and gender/queer studies. The course will also provide an opportunity for students to present their own ideas for an MA seminar paper and to receive feedback from the class.
Bibliography Djuna Barnes, "Nightwood"; Henry James, "The Wings of the Dove"; Zora Neale Hurston, "Dust Tracks on a Road"; Gertrude Stein, "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" and "Tender Buttons". Additional texts will be available on ADAM.
Comments Read "The Wings of the Dove" and "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" before the semester begins.
