Content | In the 1990 edition of her critical anthology of modernist writers Bonnie Kime Scott discovered a number of "forgotten, gender-inflected territories" (Scott) of modernism and compiled a range of neglected texts by mainly female modernist writers. Twenty-five years later gender is still a theoretical category that interacts with other categories, but the interfaces have become even more complex and need to be explored and discussed besides establishing links to postmodernist texts. |
Learning objectives | This MA seminar will introduce students to current debates on modernism and gender/queer studies. The course will also provide an opportunity for students to present their own ideas for an MA seminar paper and to receive feedback from the class. |
Bibliography | Djuna Barnes, "Nightwood"; Henry James, "The Wings of the Dove"; Zora Neale Hurston, "Dust Tracks on a Road"; Gertrude Stein, "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" and "Tender Buttons". Additional texts will be available on ADAM. |
