Content James Baldwin (1928-1987) was one of the leading American writers from the publication of his debut novel "Go Tell It On The Mountain" in 1953 until his death in 1987. His wide-ranging fiction and essays eloquently and controversially address the themes of racism, civil rights, religion, homosexuality, and literature, among others. We will study his early fiction as well as a number of his essays as part of an in-depth exploration of this brilliant and always surprising writer.
Learning objectives In-depth study of James Baldwin's novel and essays, as well as of their reception.
Bibliography The following books are required for the course:

- James Baldwin: "Early Novels & Stories" (Library of America), 978-1-88301151-2
- James Baldwin: "Collected Essays" (Library of America), 978-1-88301152-9

Selected secondary literature on the three books will be provided by the instructor.
Comments Students will contribute to a course blog (address to be determined).
