43539-01 - Research seminar: Landscape and Englishness 4 CP

Semester spring semester 2016
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this seminar, we will study the definition and evolution of the concept of Englishness with a focus on the importance of landscape in discourses of collective identity and cultural memory. We will read domestic travel accounts from the interwar period and a 'biography' of the land of Britain as well as two novels from the early 20th and 21st centuries, which have made crucial contributions to the debates about Englishness.
Learning objectives Students will improve their skill in critical analysis, reading fictional and non-fictional texts with a view to an exploration of important cultural concepts. Seminar discussions will provide the basis and frame for independent research.
