| Content | The ancient civilizations have adopted different systems of education, according to their specific political and social organization but also their own conception of what an accomplished individual should be. This course explores the models of education from ancient Near-East and Egypt to the Byzantine period with, of course, a special attention to Greece and Rome in classical times. From primary schools to universities, we will reflect upon what part of society was concerned by education, what contents were included in it and to what aims. We will draw on a vast variety of sources: literary and documentary texts but also archeological and iconographical evidence in order to have a strong overview of literacy and culture in the ancient world. |
